Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission text file is in ASCII text, Microsoft Word DOC, DOCX or RTF format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines and the JMRO Style Guide.
  • Endnotes (not footnotes) have been used for explanatory comments and are numbered with Arabic numerals (1,2,3,...).
  • Where there is more than one author a corresponding author has been designated and their email address has been provided.

  • By making a submission to JMRO authors assert the statements in points 1-7 below.

    1. I grant to the The University of Adelaide ("the University") a worldwide, perpetual, royalty free, irrevocable, non-exclusive licence to:

      1. publish the submitted work ("Work"), including publication in the JMRO and by communicating the Work online or via electronic transmission or by print;

      2. reproduce the Work in any subsequent JMRO publication, including reissues;

      3. allow readers to each make copies of the Work for their own personal use;

      4. allow third parties to create abstracts of the Work;

      5. allow third parties in the business of indexing and/or distributing journal articles to reproduce or communicate the Work in any form; and

    2. I agree that I must do all things necessary (including execute documents) to give effect to the licence referred to in this form.
    3. I agree that the The University of Adelaide shall have first publication rights in respect of the Work.
    4. I warrant that:

      1. subject to subparagraph 4.2., I am the sole owner of all rights, title and interests to any intellectual property, including copyright, contained in the Work("Intellectual Property")

      3. any persons interviewed for the Work have explicitly consented that they may be identified and quoted directly and that all or part of the content of their interviews may be used:

        1. in published academic papers or news articles

        2. on the JMRO website and in other media that may be produced

      4. the Work is original;

      5. the Work has not been published previously in any form nor is it under consideration for publication elsewhere;

      6. I am not aware of any:


        1. unauthorised or improper use or infringement of any Intellectual Property

        2. infringement of any third party's rights due to or arising from the use of any Intellectual Property

        3. actual or potential allegation, claim or action relating to the amendment , removal, revocation of or opposition to any Intellectual Property; and

        4. actual or potential proceedings, claim or action relating to the amendment, removal, revocation of or opposition to any Intellectual Property; and

      7. I have the right to grant the licence referred to in this form.

    5. I agree that I must, at my own cost, give the The University of Adelaide such assistance as may be reasonably necessary in any proceedings involving any Intellectual Property.
    6. I agree to indemnify, and keep indemnified, the The University of Adelaide from and against all actions, claims, proceedings, losses, costs, expenses (including legal expenses) and damages incurred or suffered by the The University of Adelaide in respect of or arising from or in any way related to a breach of any warranty given by myself above in this form

Author Guidelines

General information

JMRO publishes

  • English language (traditional) research text articles in PDF format and
  • film or video (non-traditional) research accompanied by an exegesis in PDF format.

Articles are peer reviewed but not blind reviewed.

Authors must obtain permission from the copyright owner for the use of any text, audio or video elements for which the copyright has not expired and in which they do not own the copyright.

JMRO is indexed in RILM Abstracts of Music Literature www.rilm.org.

Text based (traditional) research articles

There is no page limit for text articles and authors are encouraged to include high resolution still images, audio and short video samples, interactive elements, where this enhances the presentation of research.

Film or video based (non-traditional) research articles

JMRO welcomes submissions of film and video documentaries (such as field-based ethnomusicological explorations) or other forms of media, which meet the standards of online publication of music research.

Documentaries, films, and online presentations must demonstrate analysis and evaluation in addition to the documentary nature of video and sound. This may be achieved through the provision of on-screen commentary or spoken narration. Documentaries, films, and online presentations must also be accompanied by a written exegesis which contextualises, explains and interprets the media presentation.

The exegesis is written text (a manuscript in printed words) accompanying and focusing on the creative or research work, providing a critical examination of the creative or research product in the light of relevant musicological theory and practice. As required for JMRO articles, the exegesis should provide:

  • An introduction to the project;
  • Context in terms of prior research and literature;
  • Clearly articulated objectives;
  • A description of the research methods used (unless these are explicit outside the text);
  • An outline of the results and outcomes of the research;
  • Conclusions and suggestions for future research.

Formatting of the exegesis should follow the author guidelines provided for traditional JMRO research articles.

Authors wishing to publish non-traditional research articles should consult the Managing Editor if the film or video component of the research is longer than 30 minutes.
Order of Sections

The sections in a traditional manuscript or the exegesis accompanying a non-traditional film or video submission must be in the order shown below. Starred items * are required to be present.

  • Title and Author(s)*
  • Text of article*
  • Endnotes with Arabic Numbering (not footnotes)
  • Appendices
  • References (Harvard Author-Date format and in a list with Arabic numbering)
  • Sound and Image credits (attribution of recordings of audio and video elements). These must be present if there are sound or image files with the article.*
  • Abstract* (no more than 250 words)
  • Acknowledgments
  • Keywords*
  • A 100 word biography of the author*.

Fonts, titles, endnotes, citations, quotations, figures and tables.

The particular font choice or size for text is not specified but a readily available font such as Arial is preferred.
The main title and section titles should be in a font size 3-4 points larger than the body text.
Authors should suggest a short running title for the article.
Manuscripts should use endnotes, not footnotes, and they should be numbered in Arabic numerals (1,2,3,...)
Citations should be in the Harvard Author-Date style and should follow the guidelines set out in the University of Adelaide online bibliographic style guide and preferably, but not necessarily, in a different colour from the rest of the text. Any references not covered in this guide should conform to the guidelines given in The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed.
Quotations should be indented from the body text of the article and preferably, but not necessarily, in a different colour.
Figures and tables should be numbered and captioned and should appear in the text close to where they are first referenced. Figures and tables should be referred to by the figure or table number.

Submissions

JMRO accepts submission files in the following electronic formats:

For the text of articles:

  • Microsoft Word 2020
  • ASCII text

Where possible, published articles which use still images will have a low resolution version of the image for publication but will also allow readers to download a higher resolution version of the image if they wish to. Authors should thus retain high-resolution original files, since they may be needed after a submission has been accepted for publication.
Supplementary files

Graphics (such as score samples, diagrams etc), Still Images, Audio and Video Samples. Authors are encouraged to make the text, as far as possible, self-sufficient and use graphics, still images, audio and video examples only where they enhance the exposition.

The following formats will be accepted for supplementary audio files (sound files):

  • MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer 3) using Average Bitrate Compression and 128 Kbps - THIS IS THE PREFERRED FORMAT
  • WAV (Windows)
  • WMA (Windows Media Audio)

Graphics files (including score fragments) should be prepared in JPG format with at least 3000 pixels in the smaller dimension. Color depth should be set as low as possible. For regular musical examples, this will normally be just two colors (black and white), but images with color annotations are welcome. Authors should provide a logical name for each supplementary file, making sure each filename ends with its standard filename extension (e.g. .gif, .jpg, .png). Where musical examples will appear, authors should give precise citation of work titles, movement and measure numbers, and describe as fully and as clearly as possible the musical issues under discussion.

The following formats will be accepted for still image supplementary files (Score samples, diagrams, figures):

  • JPG (JPEG Image) at resolution of at least 3000 pixels in the smaller dimension - THIS IS THE PREFERRED FORMAT
  • GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
  • PNG (Portable Network Graphic)

The following formats will be accepted for film or video files:

  • MPG (MPEG Video) THIS IS THE PREFERRED FORMAT FOR (NON-TRADITIONAL RESEARCH) FILM OR VIDEO
  • MP4 (MPEG-4 Video)

Other formats may be accepted at the discretion of the Managing Editor.
Authors wishing to submit supplementary files which are larger that 10 megabytes should contact the Managing Editor before uploading the files.

Copyright Notice

First publication rights for any submitted work is granted to the The University of Adelaide once the submitted work has been accepted for publication. Submitted works which are accepted for publication are free to be used by The University of Adelaide, with proper attribution, in publications (including JMRO), archiving, educational and other non-commercial settings.

Copyright for articles published in JMRO by the The University of Adelaide is retained by the authors.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal should be original works that have not been published elsewhere. Note that to the extent that any submitted work contains intellectual property, including copyright, that is owned by a third party, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to include any such material in any article published by the the The University of Adelaide, including in JMRO.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
